A Day in Life
05.04.2010
Engine 51-1 was dispatched to an Automatic Fire Alarm @0850 hours. What initially seemed to be a routine call, turned out to be a very hazardous situation for everybody. The use of gas powered tools in an enclosed area created a situation with very high levels of CO and forced the crew on scene to evacuate and ventilate the building.
Quick thinking and acting of the officer in charge prevented worse.
CO (Carbon Monoxide) is a colorless and odorless gas that attaches itself to the red blood cells and prevents oxygen from bonding with hemoglobin. Symptoms and impact on the human body range from mild headaches to unconsciousness and death, depending on the concentration. CO is a byproduct of incomplete combustion i.e. from operating gas powered tools.
