Just before 21:00 hours, on June 18, Station 51 was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm from the Brandywine Garden Apartments in the Borough. Assistant and Engine 51-1 responded and were advised by Chester County Fire Radio that they were receiving reports of an oven fire in an apartment. Assistant 51 upgraded the assignment, adding the balance of Station 51, as well as Stations 52, 53, and 55 Ambulance. Additional 911 calls reported smoke on multiple floors as well as a possible bedroom fire.
Engine 51-1 arrived on scene and reported light smoke showing from side 'A'. Upon investigation, a heavy smoke condition on the first floor was discovered, along with a small kitchen fire, which appeared to be out. The crew from 51-1 stretched a 400' attack line and began opening up the apartment. Engine 51-2 arrived, secured 51-1's water supply, and sent its crew to assist with ventilation and checking for extension. Additional WCFD units arrived and assisted with ventilating the large apartment building.
The fire was determined to be accidental in nature. Final WCFD units cleared the scene around 22:00 hours.
