Just before 0730 on September 16, Station 51 was alerted for an automatic fire alarm in the 100 block of W Lafayette Street in West Chester Borough. Additional calls to Chester County 911 reported an odor of smoke in the building. An upgrade was requested adding the balance of the Department. Engine 51-2 arrived on location and encountered a smoke condition in the basement. The source of the smoke was found to be a water heater that was on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and the assignment was held to Engine 51-2 and Ladder 53 for ventilation.

This call was an example of how working smoke detectors aided in preventing a more serious situation.

Units: Stations 51, 52, 53, and 55 Ambulance.
