By Lieutenant Bret Baker
March 22, 2016

Just before 1am crews from 51,52,53, 55 Ambulance, Medic 91 and 58 QRS were alerted to the 700 block of South Church Street for an inside investigation. Initial reports were a unknown leaking substance in the basement of one of the University science buildings. With this information Asst 51 requested HAZMAT 15 be dispatched for a possible hazardous materials incident. WCFD units arrived on location with an active alarm in the building.

WCFD chief officers met with Hazmat station 15 officers and came up with plan to make a level "B" entry and determine the leaking substance. It was found to be good intent.

While units were picking up and wrapping up "decon" just before 3am, CCFB dispatched relocated units to the unit block of North Church Street for a reported dwelling fire. Initial calls were alarms sounding and smoke in the kitchen from an unknown source. West Chester police were quickly on location advising smoke in the alley to the rear of the structure. Engine 51-2 was able to clear from the hazmat incident and arrived as first due engine. Crews along with mutual aid stretched multiple lines and located a working fire on the first floor of the structure. Building was evacuated, fire was extinguished and the area was overhauled. Cause of the fire is still under investigation and units cleared shortly after 04:30.

Special thanks to mutual aid units who stood by during our hazardous materials incident and were able to make a quick response for the dwelling fire.
